On january 12th 2010, an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 on the richter scale struck the haitian mainland. at least 52 further aftershocks hit the country and surrounding areas. over 170,000 people are already listed as dead and the death toll looks set to rise considerably in the coming months as more are recorded. the country is currently at its knees, with the usa providing the majority of relief and support. huge areas of cities and towns are without infrastructures and basic necessities, such as water, electrics or medical aid. military support is being used as are global humanitarian efforts. the international red cross estimates that 3million people have been affected by the disaster. the thousands of bodies have been forced to be buried in mass graves, due to the high numbers that overwhelmed usual contingencies for widespread relief in the impoverished country. the capital city, port-au-prince is one of the most affected areas and aid and support are trickling into this area in due course. the us has the uss carl vincent offshore and other countries, including the uk are providing support and logistical assistance.
air drops of food and resources have been dropped over the affected areas, increasing the availability f food and supplies. the humanitarian effort continues with countries sending resources, monetary relief and tactical assistance to the troubled area. the attached video gives some indication of the devastation – some scenes may be upsetting.
