Installing Wordpress on Windows

My first task was to set up this blog. Now I am a Windows man (don’t shoot me please!) so I wanted to get Wordpress running on a Windows server.

As we had yet to decide on a Domain Name we just used the IP address of the server for this bit.

Initially I had to get PHP installed on the server which was a bit fiddly but worked in the end.

The process is defined in detail here: http://www.wikihow.com/Install-PHP-5-for-IIS-6 .

There was one part of this process that did not go as planned though and that was the ini file location. Even though it said about copying the ini file to the windows directory it used the one in c:/php so I had to copy the one from the windows directory into there. To be safe I then rebooted the server again and it worked!

I already had MySQL installed on the server so that saved a bit of time.

Next I installed the lite version of Helicon’s ISAPI Rewite 3 (http://www.helicontech.com/download-isapi_rewrite3.htm) to allow a Windows server to do the equivalent of a Mod Rewrite enabling “pretty” URLs.

OK so far so good.

I decided to cheat a little on the next step and pay someone to install Wordpress and set up the required template. I just chose the template I wanted from here and let them do the rest: http://www.bestwpthemez.com.

So here I am wrting my first blog entry and really looking forward to getting my teeth into this project.
